Clam Garden Geospatial Data - Quadra Island - 2016

Clam Garden Geospatial Data - Quadra Island - 2016 UAV Imagery - GIS data on clam gardens and rock walls. Small Inlet / Waiatt Bay Quadra Island BC.

Hakai Institute conducted UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) imagery and survey work on May 7, 8, 9, 10th of 2016. Imagery has been stitched together and elevation models extracted using Pix4D software. Survey data has been collected in NAD83 UTM zone 10 using Topcon GR5 survey equipment.

GIS data has been extracted from the imagery and surface models. Rock walls (polyline) and clam garden beds (polygon) have been produced for the entire area of imagery (Octopus Islands / Waiatt Bay / Small Inlet / Granite Bay / Kanish Bay. GIS analysis was conducted by Keith Holmes and Ginevra Toniello.

Field Work Summary for May 2016: Field equipment: Phantom 3 Pro UAV, Topcon GR5 Survey GPS, and high visibility survey targets.

May 7th: Quadra Island - covering small Inlet and part of Kanish Bay. Spatial resolution of 12 cm. High winds limited flights outside of Kanish Bay. Base stations in Granite Bay have high accuracy, while DGPS mode was used in Kanish and Small Inlet leading to high X Y accuracy and low Z (elevation) accuracy for this day only.

May 8th: "High and Dry Site" located in Small Inlet. A small section of coastline (~ 400 meters) was studied during the low tide cycle. Spatial resolution of 4 cm. High winds and clear skies. Base station and RTK was achieved and high accuracy XYZ measurements can be extracted from the surface model generated in Pix4D.

May 9th: Octopus Islands and Waiatt Bay were covered. Spatial Resolution of 12 cm. Full sun and light winds. Base station was placed on the Octopus Islands and full RTK of field targets was complete for high accuracy XYZ measurements. Note: One area of imagery was not well covered in the Octopus islands resulting in a warped shoreline.

May 10th: South Quadra Island tidal complex. This was an opportunistic flight to provide high resolution imagery of the tidal reef on the south end of Quadra Island. No targets or GPS was used. Full fun and light winds.

Attribute Information: Calculated using BC Albers NAD 83 UTM Zone 10. RW_Meters - Rock Wall Length - Meters CG_Area - Clam Garden Area - Square Meters

Further GIS analysis to be completed to enhance attribute data in 2017.

Field Crew: Keith Holmes (UAV pilot / survey gps / data processing) Archaeology team: Dana Lepofsky, Ginevra Toniello, Louie Wilson, and Nicole Smith
