Juvenile Salmon Seining Locations - Discovery Islands

The Hakai Institute Salmon Early Marine Survival Program (SEMSP) is a 4-year initiative launched in the spring of 2015 to address the need for improved knowledge of the conditions that influence juvenile salmon early marine survival in British Columbia. The program focuses on Fraser River salmon and their juvenile migration route spanning the northern Strait of Georgia, Discovery Islands and Johnstone Strait.

Using a mobile, small-boat fleet equipped with mini-purse seines, the SEMSP is conducting high temporal and spatial resolution sampling of juvenile salmon in the region, in parallel with intensive bio-oceanographic measurements. The combined resulting data will be used to test the “Trophic Gauntlet Hypothesis”, specifically the role of the Discovery Islands / Johnstone Strait as a low productivity choke point for growth along the juvenile Fraser River salmon migration route. In addition data on regional feeding ecology and juvenile growth / condition will be coupled with data on fish pathogen and parasite loads to quantify the extent to which they interact to shape the Discovery Islands / Johnstone Strait as a critical region for the early marine survival of Fraser River salmon in the Discovery Islands / Johnstone Strait region.
